We seem to value intelligence a lot on this forum. The ability to think, reason, with logic. To take in what is around you and interpret it into terms you can understand and convey.

But last night, Mal posted something that got me to thinking: Which is better, intelligence or wisdom? The ability to think or the ability to then apply that thinking for the betterment of everyone? Which do we truly value? Because it seems to me, from the way we talk to each other, we seem to care more for the intelligence while disregarding being wise.

Same rules as the other two mature discussions apply. Please, have at it.

I think they are more of the same thing, and without one you don't really have the other. Without intelligence, what wisdom could you have to apply? And without wisdom, what is your intelligence really worth? How much does your intelligence benefit anybody if you can't use it? If I really had to choose, though, I'd take wisdom. If I have what it takes to do something, then just sit there and not do it, it's a wasted opportunity. I'm not going to waste away, I'm going do what what I can, because I can. I'm not going to sit there and do nothing.

I dont know if this helps...but I recall reading a poem of the difference between knwoledge and wisdom...It basically said that knowledge is the 2+2=4 sort of thing...but wisdom is how you apply that knowledge.Like knowing how gravity works with formulas and stuff is knowlegde...but wisdom is the thing that allows you to know that if you jump off of a building, you're gonna fall.I think that this forum values intelligience, but a little bit of wisdom as well.Because you could know know alot about a subject, but if you start flame wars about you being right then your not very wise?I dont know...that whole idea is compliments of my teacher's explanation of that poem...

I agree with Free Spirit and Sophos. You can't really have a lot of one without a least a little bit of the other. Intelligence builds upon wisdom just as wisdom builds upon intelligence. I'd say that it's more common to have intelligence without wisdom, however, simply because it's often that you see very intelligent people making choices that are not wise. So I suppose that wisdom, for that reason, may be valued slightly more than intelligence.

That's the PC answer. I want to know, based on our posts in the KHIII section, in any debate thread you've seen here, what is evidently more important to us, intelligence or wisdom?

To us? Well, I'd say intelligence. It doesn't take all that much wisdom to post on a forum, but you'll get out in your place if you don't post intelligently and back up things you say.

While oth are important and by Wisdom I assume you mean common sense, I've got to go with that. Wisdom or Common Sense is basically stating that when you give an action there will be a reaction. It's the most useful skill that most people in the world never learn which is kind of sad if you think about it.

Now I am a huge advocate for higher learning but what GOOD is higher learning if there is no application.

Also what the hell did I say that sparked this? I was tired as hell and remebmber about two things I said last night.

I have to say, it's really hard to avoid making D&D jokes right now. But for what it's worth, I value intelligence more than wisdom (if wisdom is "applying knowledge for the good of all"). I'd rather be an evil genius than a well-meaning simpleton.
"Kilgore Trout once wrote a short story which was a dialogue between two pieces of yeast. They were discussing the possible purposes of life as they ate sugar and suffocated in their own excrement. Because of their limited intelligence, they never came close to guessing that they were making champagne." --Kurt Vonnegut, "Breakfast of Champions"

Well, most people who have intelligence, gain wisdom as they go. I think that the more you value intelligence, that in your independant search for it, you find wisdom in it. Intelligence, in this conversation, is limited to the scope of books, and understanding things in a literal sense. Understanding things in a literal sense is intelligence, but that also includes understanding people. Wisdom is knowing how to respond to them and to treat them, but you must also understand who they are as well, and that I would consider intelligence. If you go on without understanding people, you still don't know that much, because that is part of what it takes to be intelligent. An understanding of what is around you, that is intelligence. Knowing how to respond to it, that is wisdom. I value intelligence more, because through intelligence, I can have wisdom.

Damnit, I knew someone would beat me to a D&D reference.

Well in terms of what this forum greatly values majority wise, is intelligence. I mean, we're constantly telling our new members to behave, read the rules, yadda yadda, asking INTELLIGENCE of them, if wisdom is in great demand around here, I'd like to see where. It's not that there's a lack of it, both are present here, it's just on the surface we value intelligence over wisdom any day, not very wise of us now is it?

Well, all of this depends on how you define wisdom, as opposed to intelligence. In my opinion, intelligence is genetic, but wisdom is learned. In other words, the only way wisdom can come about is by having many experiences to look back on. So with that definition, I'd say wisdom is much better than intelligence. Practical knowledge trumps booksmartness (is that a word?) every time.

Intelligence the way I see is the characteristic of an individual man. The amount depends on genetics and other such factors. Wisdom however is the way an individual man uses his intelligence to understand the world around him, integrate his experiences, etc. I definitely like being intelligent and being able to understand what I do. but I do view wisdom being more important then intelligence. because intelligent men do not necesarily use it to make the right choices, and less intelligent men do not necesarily make the wrong choices.

In terms of activities such as careers, intelligence plays just as much of a part as wisom. In terms of living, I would say wisdom plays a much bigger part.

Intelligence is, I agree, a quintessential part of the individual, but I dont think its as important as we all think it is...A man/woman can be as smart as all-get-out and be unwise enough to drive off people, be petty and jealous of those more successful, etc. and thereby destroy whatever positive influence they may have had on the world. Any stupid person that, regardless of social class, can produce more ideas of use and APPLY THEM or SHARE THEM with particular affluence is worth more than a hundred thousand jerks with 230 IQs.

I believe that intelligence is extremely important.

However, when I think about our elders and what not, and how they have experienced far more than we have yet, I think that wisdom might in some ways be more useful than intelligence.

Because the knowledge and wisdom they've picked up along the way might cancel out the thought of pure logic and intelligence.

Where the hell am I going with this? Did anybody get anything out of that?

Intellegance, wisdom *weighs hands like there were weights on them* I think that they depend on each other, really. To me there's no point in thinking without putting it to use nor to putting to use what you can't think of.

Wisdom, in my opinion. Wisdom comes from experience, which is like a primary source, and intelligence comes from books and other secondary sources. You learn more from wisdom.

YOu guys keep missing the question. I got it. Wisdom is better. Thanks. But do we value it more here? I don't really think so. And that was my original debate topic, not which is actually better.

Oh sorry, I thought that when you said 'Which do we truly value?' you meant the human race. xD

But yeah, I think that on TKK we value Intelligence more. I think it's because we're all trying to prove our points with real facts behind our opinions. Or maybe we just want to be considered 'smart' on this forum.

Wisdom is experiencing first hand and learning from mistakes while Intelligence is watching someone learn from first hand experience. So I choose tacos.
