5th Generation of Pokemon announced.
#1 Posted 08 February 2010 - 06:58 PM
They've released a silhouette of the first of the new pokemon, which will be featured prominently in the next movie in Japan, and it will be officially revealed in a week or two...
this is kinda blowing my mind a bit, considering this is the first generation to ever be introduced on the same system as the previous, which means that there should be able to be trading between games... but probably something similar to what existed in 2nd gen, where you could only trade old pokemon that exist in both generations...
here's a link to what Serebii has so far, which is little to nothing yet. http://www.serebii.net/generation5/
it seems really soon for us, because we still don't have HGSS, but Japan has had them for about 5 months now, and there will be at least a full year's time between releases... and I honestly think it will be pushed back to an early 2011 release in Japan, so like September-November release here.
thoughts? concerns?

I'll be getting the new games, naturally... but I don't know how I feel about another generation so soon... regardless of how I feel about certain aspects of the franchise, I still am a huge fan at heart, and truly enjoy the games, so I'll be getting them. ^_^

Anyway, the biggest thing that bothers me is the fact that they're selling the same game over and over and over. They've been doing it for well over a decade now. Sure, they have better graphics, and some good new features. But you're buying the same game. It's the same scenario over and over, same setting, they just upgrade the graphics and add a new batch of Pokemon and suddenly it's a bestseller.
I will agree that each new game's gameplay is better and more fun than the last, but if they wanted to make a real sequel, they could at least put out a little originality with the storyline. Add in more events that actually put an interesting plot together that goes along on top of the journey to catch 'em all. But I'm sure every Pokemon game from now on is still going to be "Ten year old boy/girl leaves home from their single mother in their tiny town to go out on a journey to catch all Pokemon, given to them by family friend Professor NameOfAKindOfTree."
And the biggest part of third and fourth gen I don't like is just the majority of the Pokemon. I like the idea of going out and catching 'em all, but I honestly can't connect with a lot of these newer monsters.
What I thought was neat about Pokemon was that it was more like an... alternate wildlife to a fantasy world. The Pokemon were colorful and fantastical, but believable, species in this fantasy world's diverse wildlife.
There are some third and fourth that I like, and I think they still fit the basic main idea of what Pokemon was, but... for the most part, as they get more crazy, complex, armor-covered, spiky, and robotic... I really get the feeling that they're just trying to make crazy robo-monsters that don't fit in with the original "fantasy wildlife" idea of what Pokemon used to be. There are some third and fourths here and there that I like, and there are even a few first and second generation Pokemon that I really don't like. In part, because they're not really realistic with what Pokemon is supposed to be (example... Jynx... Really?).
And of course... Arceus is the god of the Pokemon universe. I mean, it created the world and all Pokemon (except Mewtwo, of course)... How do you go farther than that? Wouldn't Arceus be the end of the line for Pokemon?

Fuck team Arceus, I'm team Mewtwo.
I look in.

I mean, it contains DNA of all Pokemon, sounds pretty god-ish to me.

Like the start of hte pokemon world maybe. With like Legendary Ghost types and stuff. More ancients and ruins. The legendary themes could be of the origin

I mean, of course, generation one was awesome. Generation two was arguably so, but I still very thoroughly enjoyed it; Most of the contributions held the variety and sensibility of pokemon from the old days.
Now, however, we are left with this:

Please... Just let the series I cherished as a child die peacefully and with the little bit of dignity it has left. Or at least branch out from the turn based RPG formula a little. I wouldn't mind another genre of a game using the original 155. Or even up to generation 2. But after that it just gets stupid.
But sometimes they don't make sense.
Refrigerator.

Yes. That is Stephen Colbert swinging around with Spiderman. No, I did not draw it. Some guy from Marvel did.
Cheers!!
Hope to return one day...

Pff, Bidoof is the coolest- what are you talking about?
It gets no worse than this:

That does sound interesting enough, but I think it's still going to be set in "present day".
An ancient Pokemon world would be very interesting. Perhaps the next generation game would feature the main character being among the first to discover an all-new region with ancient Pokemon all over the place. They could have ancestors to modern-day Pokemon, and perhaps give a bit more light on the Legendaries, Unowns, and other mysterious Pokemon.
Edit:
And as ridiculously awful as it is, Bidoof is closer to what counts as a "normal" Pokemon than plenty of other fourth-gens. XD
... Plus, Bidoof has become, at least in my eyes, so fucking stupid that it's amazing.

Most of my favorite pokemon now come from later generations.
And Strax, I mean in like present day time. Like a new island has been discovered. Earlier forms of pokemon can be there, or just pre evolution. Ghost pokemon would be more popular along with rock/ground. Lots of fossils and stuff. There could be a Team trying to uncover the origin of say pokemon evolution or something like that.

And there ARE some decent ones in newer generations.
Shinx is totally fine.

And it's evolutions, while not my favorite designs, aren't bad at all.
But it's just not enough to make it feel like it's still Pokemon. They've got all these crazy designs now, and it really doesn't feel true to what Pokemon is. They're only continuing because they're a money-whore franchise, and that's really all it comes down to. They know there are people out there like yourself who will buy ANYTHING they put out, and so they don't need to be too concerned with quality. It's just quantity.
Could the new generation be better than 3 and 4? Well, maybe. But like Strax, I really don't have my hopes up.

I'm not anticipating the new game, but I'll certainly be surprised if it actually turns out to be any good.

Thanks, Jade. c:

... God I feel like an old man. "BACK IN MA DAY THERE WERE ONLY ONE HUNDRED FIFTY ONE O' DEM POKERMANS! AND THEY DIDN'T LOOK LIKE ROBUTZ NEITHER. OH I REMEMBER THOSE GOOD OLD DA - OH GOD MY HIP"

I mean, to me, what made the franchise cool was the pokemon looked almost believable. It was a world with dozens and dozens of cute, ferocious, and cool animals that could totally be real in that world.
Now now now, calm down. I know electric mouses and gigantic rock snakes don't really exist, but they were drawn without the cartoony and completely RANDOM look that now dominates all the higher generations. Sure, they were cartoons, but at least they matched the characters in the anime and the games in terms of artistic style. If you like Pokemon now, more power to you
However, like I said, the franchise has changed, and thus different people will like it.
Oh, and on a side note Strax, that pre-historic island is one of the most cool and original ideas correlated with Pokemon I've heard of in a LOOONG time
But sometimes they don't make sense.

And come on, Bidoof is like... a beaver. I don't think it's ridiculous. Well... It is ridiculous, but it looks believable and it looks enough like a Pokemon.
What I'm more concerned about are the Digimon-looking Pokemon...

... and the robot-dragons.

I mean, I get that they're legendary and need to look cool, but... Jeweled, armored dragon-bots? o__O
Believe me, there are some first and second gen Pokemon that I'm not the biggest fan of, but they just seem to be in higher supply with the newer generations...
I'm not disappointed with the revealed two, but Nintendo's going to really need to pull through hard with this generation if they want to appeal to everyone in their fanbase.

one thing I've always wanted to see is water/fire typing in a pokemon... I think it could work out really interestingly. good, solid fire types period would be appreciated after the failgasm that was the fire type in gen 4.
But I definitely see what you guys mean about the digimon-esque species and about the direction in general the series is going in... Different people like the games for different reasons, and some people would love nothing more than for there to be thousands of different species of pokemon to catch. (Not saying I'm THAT far gone or anything, but if it's done well I see no problem with continuing.)
The third generation gave me some of my favorites, as far as a "Dream Team" should I decide to drift off and imagine myself actually having pokemon. XD Blaziken, Tropius, Sableye (for typing only) are pretty nice in my opinion. The fourth added some nice aspects as well, and I was really surprised at how much I liked Snover/Abomasnow... Grass/Ice really appealed to me, despite it's utter failure against fire types. (Not like it had much to worry about, since there were like 5 fire types available in the main game, right?)

It's the poor designing of the vast majority of the Pokemon that bothers me, and yeah, the direction the series is going. It just doesn't seem like Pokemon anymore, and what they've turned Pokemon into really doesn't appeal to me.
If they could improve upon the system and experiment WHILE designing Pokemon that don't suck, then I'd be interested. If they do that for this new generation, I might be interested- but like I've said, based on previous generations I'm not gonna get my hopes up.
As for Shinx/Bidoof- no, I'm not a huge fan of their designs, especially in comparison to previous Pokemon. But those are two examples that at least do stay true to the series, and while they don't look great, they at least look like Pokemon. Bidoof is just ridiculous because, well... it's supposed to be.
And of course there will always be people who wanna catch 'em all, no matter how many, no matter how poorly designed. Nintendo knows this. They don't have to try too hard when there are so many fans who
